Trash Days Changed Irrigation Adjustments Needed?

Thanks to Leesa Willis for this suggestion.

Since the days that our trash and lawn refuse collection days have changed, anyone think to adjust your watering system's programming? Leesa hadn't and I know I haven't. On one of those very cold mornings, Leesa was concerned because the trash collectors appeared to be soaked by the wet trash bags they were loading into the trash truck and stopped to speak to them.

"My hauler suggested that it would be helpful if we would not run our sprinklers on mornings when we have trash, lawn debris, etc. pickup. This is especially an issue on those colder mornings. The guys get soaked picking up wet debris."

If your sprinkler system is programmed to go on after you put your trash out the night before collection day, please consider changing the time your sprinkler runs to later in the day, to the afternoon hours, after the trash has been collected.

Watering days and times are set by the district so watering doesn't overburden their equipment and to conserve Florida's fragile water table and limited water supply, so residents don't waste water through evaporation by watering during the hottest part of the day.

Generally speaking,

  • Even-numbered homes (address ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 & 8) water their lawns on Wednesdays & Saturdays
    between the hours of 12 a.m.10:00 a.m. & 4:00 p.m.12 a.m.
  • Odd-numbered homes (address ending in 1, 3, 5, 7 & 9) water their lawns on Thursdays & Sundays.
    between the hours of 12 a.m.10:00 a.m. & 4:00 p.m.12 a.m.

Here in District 5, there may be some deviation to these days because the district uses lot numbers instead of house numbers, so check the front cover of your sprinkler system's controller for the days you can water.
