the July meeting of the TBCS (Tampa Bay
Computer Society). The following are some of the resources mentioned by Mr.
Poplock. You can see all the courses and websites mentioned in the presentation,
some free and some with fees. Some of the free ones are included here.
- TechBoomers — Non-technical,
how-to free courses for the novice. Learn how to use popular websites and
- Ask Abby Stokes — Helps newbies
conquer their fear of technology. Includes easy-to-understand videos (that
can also be printed out) based on topics in her book, which she wrote trying
to teach her mother how to use the computer and other digital devices. Also
can order her book "Is this thing on?", a friendly guide to all things
digital for newbies, technophobes, and the kicking & screaming.
- Hewie Poplock's website/blog/classes —
Includes videos & tutorials, links to articles he's written, articles on
other websites, product reviews, and more.
- YouTube — Videos on any topic,
anyone, events, reviews, showing you how to do anything, have your questions
answered, etc., just search.
- Ted videos — Ideas Worth Spreading,
covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — a
clearinghouse of free knowledge from the world's most inspired thinkers.
Topics from A to Z, videos of talks worth watching.
- Goodreads — Free website for
- WebMD — Timely and
trustworthy medical news and information. Includes easy-to-understand
information on health, drugs and medications, health news,
and a symptom checker. You can also sign up for health-specific email
newsletters (e.g., Arthritis, Diabetes, etc.).
Schools & Lifelong Learning Online
Online — A branch of Stanford University, offer courses taught by
Stanford faculty to lifelong learners worldwide on math, science &
technology, etc., many of them free.
- Khan Academy — Free online
courses, lessons & practice for math (at various levels), science &
engineering, computing, arts & humanities, economics & finance, test prep
and career skills.
Computer Clubs & Organizations
Here in The Villages, there are five clubs:

forget all the resources available to us through our own
Villages Public Library for learning, adventure, entertainment, and
relaxation — Books, eBooks, audio books, DVDs, CDs, even comics.
