For many of us, using a computer or taking advantage of the Internet is a relatively new experience. When we moved here, many of us got a service provider and email address to stay in touch with kids, grandkids, friends and family back home. If we do use the computer, many of us only know how to get and send emails.

People periodically say they don't know how to do something and ask me how they can do it, so I thought some step-by-step instructions may be helpful. Even though I'm not an expert, I can help you with some procedures.

Copy & Paste Text or Pictures

Ever find an article on the Internet that you would like to save or share with a friend? Don't print it out then type the text into your document or email. The fast and easy way to extract information you want to use is to copy & paste.

  1. Open the email or a document where you want the information pasted.

  2. Block the information you want to copy by moving the mouse cursor to the start of the information you want to copy, press and hold the left mouse button, then block what you want to copy.

The fastest and easiest way to block information is one of two ways:

    • Press the left mouse button, then hold and drag the cursor until all the information wanted is highlighted, or you can

    • Click the left mouse button at the start of the information, move the cursor to the end, press the Shift key and left click the mouse again.

  3. Move the cursor to anywhere over the blocked information, then click the right mouse button. A mini menu opens.

  4. Right click on Copy.

  5. Move the mouse cursor to where you want to paste the information and click the left mouse button.

  6. Then press the Control key on your keyboard and the letter v (Ctrl + v). Voila!

I find that using the keyboard is much faster and simpler than using menus. Try it both ways and let me know what you think.
